Economic Policy and Fertility: An Analysis of Effects and Evidence

Abstract

This is the fifth report in the Swedish government inquiry Framtid med barn. It reviews evidence on how economic policy affects fertility and concludes that structural conditions in housing, the labour market and welfare are more important to address than relying on financial transfers alone. The English title is a translation; the report itself is in Swedish.

Rumours of the death of remote work are greatly exaggerated

Ekonomisk Debatt

Abstract

Using a national survey of Swedish workers in 2025, this article examines whether remote work has declined since the pandemic. It finds that office workers averaged 1.77 days working from home per week, close to the 2022 level of 1.8 days. Hybrid work appears to have stabilised, with substantial differences by age, region and family situation. The article argues that blanket office requirements can make recruitment harder, while purposeful in-person work can support coordination and collaboration.

Abstract

This book review discusses Andrew Ross Sorkin’s account of the 1929 US stock-market crash in 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History—and How It Shattered a Nation. The authors describe the book as richly researched and informative, while noting that its detail can at times be excessive. They compare its narrative approach with John Kenneth Galbraith’s classic economic analysis of the crash.
