The lifespan problem: Why EU circular economy indicators understate progress

Abstract

The article examines how EU circular economy indicators account for product lifespans. The author argues that when lifespan is not adequately measured, the indicators can understate progress. The article therefore contributes to the discussion about how the transition to a circular economy should be monitored and evaluated.

Abstract

Using a national survey of Swedish workers in 2025, this article examines whether remote work has declined since the pandemic. It finds that office workers averaged 1.77 days working from home per week, close to the 2022 level of 1.8 days. Hybrid work appears to have stabilised, with substantial differences by age, region and family situation. The article argues that blanket office requirements can make recruitment harder, while purposeful in-person work can support coordination and collaboration.
