Effects of School Leadership in Sweden: An Evaluation of the National Principal Training Programme 2009–2021

Abstract

This report evaluates Sweden’s National Principal Training Programme using data on 3,783 participants from 2009 to 2021. The results indicate no noticeable improvement in student outcomes or teachers’ assessments of principals’ pedagogical leadership. The analyses also suggest that principals have limited influence on variation in grades compared with other factors.

Precision in school mental health investment: Heterogeneous effects across dual-factor subgroups

Research Square preprint

Abstract

This open preprint studies whether municipal spending on school mental health services is associated with different mental-health profiles among adolescents. Using survey data for 63,190 ninth-grade students in 26 municipalities from 2006 to 2024, the authors distinguish profiles by psychiatric symptoms and subjective well-being. Within-municipality spending increases are associated with lower odds of the “Troubled” profile, but not the “Vulnerable” profile, whose members report low well-being without high symptoms. The authors suggest services may need to better identify this group. The study reports associations, not randomized causal effects.

Preparing principals: A causal test of school leadership training as a distributed property

Academy of Management Proceedings, 2026(1), abstract 16403

Abstract

This conference paper studies whether leadership training has effects across school leadership teams when principals and assistant principals are trained at different times. Using longitudinal data on 3,783 principals and assistant principals, it finds that training order matters: training principals first is associated with gains in student achievement through collaborative mechanisms, while teacher ratings of instructional leadership decline, suggesting leadership may be redistributed across the team. The published proceeding contains an abstract rather than a full paper.

Abstract

This study uses multimodal MRI and clinical measures to examine spinal cord involvement and cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease. It compares 26 patients with Parkinson’s disease and 22 healthy controls, including patient groups with and without REM sleep behaviour disorder. The authors report associations between spinal cord imaging measures and cardiovascular dysautonomia, particularly in the group with REM sleep behaviour disorder. The findings are observational and do not establish that the MRI changes cause autonomic symptoms.
