Ratio Working Paper No 343: Populism, Liberalism and the Quest for Meaning and Community

Sammanfattning

Liberalism is losing ground, while populist or even authoritarian nationalist regimes are on the rise. This paper argues that the causes of the decline are, at least partly, endogenous, that a narrow focus on economic efficiency and the successful critique of socialism and the welfare state have created an idea vacuum that has opened up for these illiberal tendencies. The conclusion is that a central challenge for liberalism is to offer a comprehensive idea and narrative about meaning and community that is not socialistic, conservative or nationalistic, but distinctly liberal, to counter these developments.

How can we fight back against the populist threat to liberty, free markets, and the open society?

This open access book by Nils Karlson explores the strategies used by left- and right-wing populists to make populism intelligible, recognizable, and contestable. Karlson argues that to fight back requires the revival of liberalism itself by defending and developing the liberal institutions, the liberal spirit, liberal narratives, and liberal statecraft. The book presents a synthesized explanatory model for how populists promote autocratization through the deliberate polarization of society and traces the ideational roots of the core populist ideas that form a collectivistic identity politics. Written within the tradition of political theory and institutional economics, this book uses a wide variety of sources, including results and analyses from social psychology, ethics, law, and history.

I Sverige är möjligheten att ta till sympatiåtgärder såväl generös som omstridd. Vissa menar att sympatiåtgärderna bidrar till att vårt land har få utbrutna arbetsmarknadskonflikter medan kritikerna hävdar att regelverket är förlegat, med hänsyn till nutidens sammankopplade värdekedjor och global konkurrens. Klart är dock att sympatiåtgärder drabbar parter som inte är direkt berörda av en konflikt, något som på senare tid varit särskilt uppmärksammat i och med Teslakonflikten.

I rapporten “Sympatiåtgärdernas logik, praktik och konsekvenser” kartlägger Nils Karlson, professor i statsvetenskap, sympatiåtgärdernas historia, logik, praktik och konsekvenser. Följande frågor berörs: Vilka är sympatiåtgärdernas avsedda och oavsedda effekter? Vilka kostnader är förenade med sympatiåtgärdernas användning? Och finns det skäl att förändra regelverket kring dessa stridsåtgärder?
